Rotaract Oshksh lost its President, Jerry Medina, in a tragic car accident on January 30.
I write to say thanks. Actually, I write to say thanks for a lot of things.
Thanks for your help. I would have had a really hard time starting Rotaract Oshkosh without you. Your colleague Dan, a Rotarian, was the one that gave me your name. He said you would probably be interested. That’s why I sent you that left-field [read: frantic] email in spring 2012. Luckily, you responded right away.
Thanks for showing up. To Planet Perk in June to hear me out, to Fond du Lac’s chartering, to all those organizational meetings. And with good company!
Thanks for introducing me to Dan and Becky. I am certain Rotaract would not be what it is without them. They came because of you. So did Shelly and Brandon. Together we grew into something real, something to be proud of.
Thanks for introducing me to Meredith. We only met a handful of times, but I recognized a familiar soul. Writing and animal welfare mean a lot to both of us. Once or twice we even toyed with the idea of dropping everything to start a rescue of our own. (Meaning more animals, of course.)
Thanks for your laughter. Monthly meetings or volunteering, you were the life of all our proverbial parties. Exec meetings are especially fond memories. You were the first one to laugh and the first to make everybody else laugh. You and Shelly would inevitably bicker; you and Dan would joke about sports or work, and you were the quickest to make a snarky remark that rocked the whole table.
Thanks for rallying everyone. Like that night we volunteered with Downtown Rotary at Waterfest, do you remember? Someone had the idea to cheer for people who tipped us. Then you took it to the next level and really made a ruckus. Again, laughter. Much of it because of you. That night will go down as my favorite volunteering event.
Our friendship formed around Rotaract almost two years ago. I am so glad it did. I am so glad our paths crossed. You have touched my life, Jerry Medina. Thank you for being.
